far from Ponferrada, capital city of El Bierzo, the traveller
can choose several routes, by car, bike (even on horse or walking)
for discovering the region. In the city of Ponferrada, the visit
begins into the Old Town, as a departure point towards
the most interesting places, such as the Town Council square,
the Church of La Encina, or the castle, that was built
in the XIth century and belonged to the knights of the Temple
Order till 1312.
The Museum of El Bierzo, keeps a very interesting collection
of items and documents from the paleolithic age to nowadays.
The visitor can visit as well The Clock Tower, and the House
of the coats of Arms, that houses the Museum of the Radio,
with a complete collection of antique and modern radio sets; in
the centre of the city, you can also visit the Railway Museum.

Across the region of El Bierzo, the visitor may choose several
routes, towards Los Ancares mountains, Fornela
or Valcarce valleys, Seo and Aquilianos mountains,
or, specially recommended, a visit to Las
Médulas, a huge remain of a roman gold mine, open
air, that offers an astonishing view, from the Orellán viewpoint.
Before
this impactive visit, you can climb up to see the Cornatel
Castle, built on a rocky mountain, or walk down to the
Carucedo Lake. At Peñalba ("white rock"), pay a
visit to the Santiago Church, a Xth century beautiful
building, mozarabic style.
Walking along the Silencio river, the traveller finds
Saint Genadio's Cave, and the ruins of Montes' Monastery,
from the VIIth century; and the St. Cross Hermitage,
rebuilt in 1723 over the ruins of another hermitage from 905;
it's an important visigothic relic.
Besides this, the traveller may visit the roman Rupiano
castro, that was inhabited by the workers of the water
irrigation system of Las Médulas gold mines.
